Youth in Energy Empowerment Program (YEEP)

The Youth in Energy Empowerment Program (YEEP) is a Youth Innovation internship program run under Eenovators Limited with the aim to equip young people with a background in engineering, and aged between 21-30 years with energy skills and experience required to position them for employment and entrepreneurship in the energy space.

Every year, Eenovators and other companies in the energy industry receive an overwhelming number of job applications from post-graduates in engineering and energy programmes. The industry has however not been able to accommodate all these unemployed youth. With most employers opting to work with more experienced persons and private consultants, the youth are left with few or no opportunities at all.

Eenovators Limited having identified the need to build capacity among these youth through training, mentorship and internships, and in order to equip them with skills and experience needed to position them for employment and entrepreneurship in the energy industry, launched the YEEP in June 2020.

First Cohort YEEP 2021

The Launch

YEEP cohort 1 was launched on 19 January 2021, through a virtual event attended by partners and the selected students.

In June 2020, Eenovators limited released a call for applications inviting young people from East Africa to join the YEEP program. The applicants went through a series of assessments and the best 12 selected to join the first cohort. This Cohort is being implemented under the project ‘Building ESCO Models for Promotion of Food Security through Water and Energy Management’ which is a collaboration between GIZ and Eenovators Limited under the Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) initiative.
The 12 youth; four (4) girls and eight (8) boys, will undergo a ten-month programme consisting of formal technical training, essential skills training for professional development as well as a practical industrial attachment for hands on experience. The programme commences with the formal four months training period covering The Energy Audit Technician (EAT) syllabus, which is the core syllabus for this cohort and will be followed by examinations for international certification. The training is being provided by the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa (IEPA) and is specializing on water auditing, energy auditing, and energy and water management. Learners will then undergo a six months internship upon completion of the training and passing of exams.

The program has identified ten host sites, in the agrifood industry, where the students will be placed for internship. It has also engaged Energy and Water Management experts who will mentor the YEEP cohort 1 students throughout the training and internship period.

Local Plans

Subsequent cohorts of the YEEP program seeks to scale this unique learning and internship opportunity to young people from all around Africa.

Through strategic partnerships and access to funding, YEEP will impact the lives of many African Youth through quality energy training. The incoming plan will explore integrating certification programs such as the Certified Energy Manager (CEA), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) and Renewable Energy Professional (REP) among others into YEEP.  The bigger picture also seeks to enrich the internship opportunities by making it possible for youth to experience difference African economies in a bid to harmonize the energy agenda and collectively push the Sustainable Development Goals.
