An Eenovators-led team on a client site during an energy walk-through

Course description

Adapted from the U.S. Department of Energy 'Energy Treasure Hunt' and re-modelled for the Kenyan and global market, the Energy Safari is a team-based event in which participants go onto their own site to hunt for low-cost and no-cost energy-saving opportunities, quantify them, and pitch them to management for buy-in. It is engaging, competitive and intensely practical — the majority of the time is spent on the floor, not in the classroom — and it leaves the organisation with a prioritised, costed opportunity register and an energised team.

Who it's for

Cross-functional facility teams: operators, technicians, maintenance and facility engineers, supervisors and energy champions.

What you'll be able to do

  • Plan and lead an in-plant energy treasure hunt, including team make-up and scope.
  • Profile equipment energy use and spot operational waste across key systems.
  • Collect energy data using common diagnostic and measurement tools.
  • Quantify savings and return on investment for identified opportunities.
  • Build and present a prioritised opportunity register to management for buy-in.

Course outline — 3 days

  • Day 1 — Prepare. What a treasure hunt is and the value of the approach · team make-up — the right people and processes · what to look for: lighting, compressed air, steam, HVAC, motors, idle equipment, leaks · data-collection tools, instruments and site safety · scoping the site and forming the hunt teams.
  • Day 2 — The hunt. Teams go to the floor to observe and measure across shifts and areas · logging opportunities on the standard hunt template · midday calibration and facilitator coaching · an afternoon deep-dive on the facility's major energy users.
  • Day 3 — Quantify & pitch. Savings and ROI calculations for each opportunity · prioritisation by impact vs. effort · preparing the management presentation · teams present the opportunity register to management for buy-in · a replication plan across departments and sites.
How it's taught: Roughly 70% practical and on-site, delivered as a friendly team competition with real measurements and ROI templates, and culminating in a live management presentation. Participants are assessed on the opportunity register and presentation, and receive an Eenovators Certificate of Completion.
